A recent Savannah resident received a long overdue award from the French government for his service in the Air Force in World War II. Retired Staff Sgt. James Livingston, who served with the Mighty Eighth Air Force, served as a gunner on the B-24 Liberator during the storming of Normandy beach on June 6, 1944.

On Sunday September 25, just up the road from Nine Line’s facility, Livingston was knighted to the French Legion on Honor at his home on Whitemarsh Island. The medalĀ of Knighthood was bestowed upon Livingston by Denis Blackburne, the honorary consul of France in Savannah, and is the highest award given by the French nation.
