Late last night, President Trump announced he would be pulling U.S. troops out of northeast Syria. The decision came after a scheduled call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and appears to put American-backed Kurdish-led fighters in danger of a military assault by Turkey, which has long viewed the Kurds in northern Syria as a security threat.

In a series of tweets, Trump defended his decision saying “I was elected on getting out of these ridiculous endless wars, where our great Military functions as a policing operation to the benefit of people who don’t even like the USA…The endless and ridiculous wars are ENDING! We will be focused on the big picture, knowing we can always go back & BLAST!”

But it was his threat to punish Turkey economically, if Erdogan steps out of line after the withdrawal, that set the twitterverse ablaze.

Trump tweeted “If Turkey does anything that I, in my great and unmatched wisdom, consider to be off limits, I will totally destroy and obliterate the Economy of Turkey (I’ve done before!)

The phrase “great and unmatched wisdom” has spawned its own hashtag, trending with (not surprisingly) Wizard of Oz.

Here’s just a selection of hashtag responses from (verified) Trump critics…

And some other ones…

But then there are those who support the president’s decision, because it was simply another conflict the U.S. could never win.

What do you think? Is this last one correct?
