Yesterday, the nation was rocked by yet another school shooting.

A 16-year-old student at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, about 50 miles north of Los Angeles, shot five other teens, two fatally, before turning the gun on himself.

Police say the shooting took only 16 seconds from start to finish.

According to CNN, the shooter walked into the school’s quad area Thursday morning carrying a backpack. He retrieved a .45-caliber pistol without saying a word and fired one round, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said.

After shooting one student, he cleared a jam on the weapon and fired an additional four rounds at others, then himself.

CNN also reports the first people on the scene to assist were three off-duty law enforcement officers who were dropping off their own children at the school.

Detective Daniel Finn of the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station was driving away when he heard gunshots and saw terrified children run out. He turned his car around and rushed into the school.

Officer Sean Yanez of Inglewood police and LAPD’s Gus Ramirez also rushed to the scene

All three were off-duty and entered the school within seconds, Villanueva said.

“It’s a tragedy every way you look at it, but there’s a silver lining behind this: the fact that off-duty first responders were there and did not hesitate … and they rendered first aid immediately,” the sheriff said.

Naturally the event was immediately politicized by the left.

Senator Richard Blumenthal found out about the shooting while debating gun control on the Senate floor.

Presidential hopeful, Senator Kamala Harris, also quickly weighed in.

The problem is, none of the “commonsense” gun control ideas currently being floated would have stopped this tragedy.

The shooter was only 16. It was illegal for him to own a firearm in the first place, and no “universal background check” would have flagged him.

It was a .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun, not an “assault rifle.”

He didn’t have a “high capacity magazine” apparently. The police say five rounds were fired and the gun was empty when it was retrieved. (According to that report, one bullet must have hit multiple victims).

There were no other signs of mental illness that could have been flagged – such as was the case with the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooter in Florida.

There is simply no single piece of legislation that could have prevented this tragedy.

It’s horrible, but we still have not figured out a way to prevent evil and madness in this world. Our forebears tried using “eternal damnation” as a deterrent, and we all know how effective that’s been through the ages.

It didn’t work before there were such things as pistols, semi-automatic rifles, bombs and suicide vests.

What makes anyone think another law will be effective?

Of course, the unspoken objective in all of this for “gun activists” is to get guns out of the hands of every civilian in our nation.

Well, molon labe.
