You might recall the moment in 2018 when Saturday Night Live cast member, Pete Davidson, attempted to make jokes about former Navy SEAL Dan Crenshaw, who was then running for election in the House of Representatives. Crenshaw lost an eye to an I.E.D. in Afghanistan.

Davidson, 26, reportedly lives in the basement of his mother’s house, suffers from Crohn’s disease, bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder, and recently checked himself into rehab (again). His father was a New York firefighter who died on 9/11, when Pete was just 7, leaving him with PTSD as well.

Apparently, all that justified him saying of Crenshaw at the time, “This guy is kind of cool, Dan Crenshaw. You may be surprised to hear he’s a congressional candidate from Texas and not a hitman in a porno movie. I’m sorry, I know he lost his eye in war or whatever…”

It was the last part, “whatever,” that ignited outrage against Davidson, which most people found disrespectful to the nation and to those who serve.

The next week, Crenshaw agreed to appear with Davidson on SNL The veteran Crenshaw got to dish out a few good-natured jabs to Davidson, and Davidson offered an apology, which Crenshaw graciously accepted.

But check out this clip and see if you think the apology was actually sincere.

Because apparently it wasn’t.

Davidson is now walking it back.

In his new Netflix special, “Alive From New York,” Davidson devotes a fairly significant amount of time to retell the story of how he wrote the initial controversial comments about Crenshaw and the ensuing backlash.

“I made fun of this guy with an eye patch and then I kind of got forced to apologize ‘cause like people were threatening to shoot me in the face.”

“I didn’t think I did anything wrong,” he said. “It was like words that were twisted so that a guy could be famous.”

Oh riiiight. All credit to Davidson, for giving Crenshaw national notoriety.

Davidson said his original remarks were misinterpreted.

“I said, ‘Whatever,’ and people were like, ‘You hate America!’” he said. “No, I just didn’t want to be incorrect about how he lost his f*****g eye. Is that a f*****g crime?”

Davidson then sarcastically apologized for not having a “baseball card with all of [Crenshaw’s] stats and information.”

But in the new special Davidson doesn’t apologize for his disparaging comments. Instead he apologizes for making Crenshaw popular — though he said he couldn’t be credited or blamed for Crenshaw’s victory.

“I did not make that guy win. That is America’s fault.” he said. “The only thing I did do, which I am guilty of and I apologize for, is I did make that guy famous and a household name for no reason.”

For no reason. What a putz.

What makes all of this so galling is Crenshaw even reached out to Davidson, when in a now-deleted Instagram post, Davidson appeared to express suicidal thoughts.

“i really don’t want to be on this earth anymore,” Davidson wrote, “i’m doing my best to stay here for you but i actually don’t know how much longer i can last. all i’ve ever tried to do was help people. just remember i told you so.”

Crenshaw said he reached out to give Davidson support in what seemed to be a time of crisis.

“I told him everyone had a purpose in this world. God put you here for a reason,” Crenshaw said.

Maybe one day, Davidson will get the help he needs to overcome the issues that torment him.
