It was an ordinary shopping day in Manhattan that went horribly wrong. A 25-year-old woman who had moved to Manhattan only two weeks before was carrying a bag of groceries in each hand when she was hit by a Mercedes SUV turning right as she was in the crosswalk.

The driver of the Mercedes then hit another car stopped at the traffic light, and caused
a chain reaction involving more vehicles.

The victim, Veronika (who declined to use her last name), said she remembers the incident from start to finish.

“I remember I was on the sidewalk, the car came, the car hit me. I was completely under the car,” she told NBC New York.

“Both legs were kind of stuck under one of the wheels,” she recalled.

“I was conscious for the entire time. I remembered seeing my groceries were all over the floor,” Veronika said.

That’s when a dozen or so quick-thinking good Samaritans rushed over to help. A video posted on Twitter shows the perfect strangers rush toward the black SUV and grab hold of it from the driver’s side. Then in tandem, the group begin lifting vehicle until someone screams, “she’s out! Down, down, down!”

Veronika managed literally to walk away from her ordeal with no broken bones and is expected to make a full recovery.

“I’m extremely bruised and in a lot of pain but all of that will heal so that’s the good thing,” Veronika but she wanted to make certain she expressed her appreciation for her rescuers.

“I want to say a big thank you to everyone who helped. I don’t know how I can ever pay that back, I’m really grateful for everyone that helped,” she said.

USA Today reports first responders were at the scene soon after Veronika was pulled out to safety. She was then taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition, treated for her injuries and released.

According to authorities, the 65-year-old driver of the Mercedes SUV was issued a summons for failure to yield to a pedestrian.

Holy mackerel. It all could have been a heckuva lot worse. We don’t often hear feel-good stories coming out of New York City. And with so much tragedy and anger all over the place, we forget that most people really are kind and concerned for their fellow human beings on this planet.

Thank God.
