City of Savannah Mourns Loss of Master Firefighter Michael Curry

The city of Savannah is in mourning this week following the death of Master Firefighter Michael Curry, a 13 year veteran of the Savannah Fire Department.

Curry and other firefighters responded to a call on Saturday when a floating dock full of people collapsed and fell into the Savannah River. Curry and others dove in to help save the victims, rescuing all 55 of those involved. Tragically, Curry collapsed following the rescue effort, and passed away shortly after.

Curry was honored along with other fallen firefighters from Savannah and the surrounding counties, in the annual Firefighters Memorial Service. The service is typically held in October, but was postponed this year following the devastation of Hurricane Matthew. Curry left behind an eight year old son, a brotherhood at the SFD, and a troop of Cub Scouts. He was beloved by his family, by the men he worked alongside, and by the children he inspired.

“All of the children, he took a personal interest in,” one Scout mother, Pam Terekhova, said of Curry. “He was a light. That’s how I would describe him – a bright light.”
