WATCH: Rare New Yorkers’ original footage of Twin Towers attacks Nine Line News Team September 11, 2020 Nine Line News 182 Here is a sobering thought: however they are attending school this year, not a single high school student in America today was alive when the nation was attacked on 9/11/2001. It happened at a time when office buildings in Manhattan were full of workers, restaurants were busy with diners (eating inside), Broadway shows were packed and we shook hands with strangers. The attack occurred five years before Twitter became a thing. Six years before the first iPhone. The entire attack, from the moment the first plane hit to the collapse of both towers, lasted only 102 minutes: 8:46 a.m. ET – American Airlines Flight 11 (traveling from Boston to Los Angeles) strikes the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. 9:03 a.m. ET – United Airlines Flight 175 (traveling from Boston to Los Angeles) strikes the south tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. 9:37 a.m. ET – American Airlines Flight 77 (traveling from Dulles, Virginia, to Los Angeles) strikes the Pentagon Building in Washington. 9:59 a.m. ET – South tower of WTC collapses in approximately 10 seconds. 10:03 a.m. ET – United Airlines Flight 93 (traveling from Newark, New Jersey, to San Francisco) crashes in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. 10:28 a.m. ET – North tower of WTC collapses. It’s amazing that any archival video footage exists at all, but it does. A student at NYU named Caroline Dries managed to record video footage from her dorm room as the tragedy unfolded, capturing her own personal reactions and those of her friends. At first she calmly talks to her mother on the phone as they try to make sense of what happened to the first tower. Then the second plane hits… A few regular New Yorkers and people across the river in New Jersey had the presence of mind to document the unimaginable scenes they were witnessing. At the street level, a New Yorker recorded the terrifying moment the south tower collapsed. In 2001, we still had some trust in the media.
