Boom: Internet responds to NYT staffer “disturbed” after seeing American flags on trucks Nine Line News Team June 10, 2021 Nine Line News, Relentlessly Patriotic 1,117 Mara Gay, a member of the New York Times editorial board, and contributor to MSNBC, over the weekend said the sight of “dozens of American flags” flown on trucks in Long Island, New York, over the weekend was “disturbing.” During an appearance on MSNBC, Gay said, “I was on Long Island this weekend visiting a really dear friend, and I was really disturbed. I saw, you know, dozens and dozens of pickup trucks with expletives against Joe Biden on the back of them, Trump flags, and in some cases just dozens of American flags, which is also just disturbing.” Gay said the message being sent by the Trump supporters was clear: “This is my country. This is not your country. I own this.” “The reality is here that we have a large percentage of the American population — I don’t know how big it is, but we have tens of millions of Trump voters who continue to believe that their rights as citizens are under threat by simple virtue of having to share the democracy with others.” By “others” Gay implied that the real problem is racism. “I think that as long as they see Americanness as the same as one with Whiteness, this is going to continue,” Gay continued, claiming that Americans must address “Whiteness,” but a “large percentage of Americans” don’t grasp the threat it poses. Now you’re a racist if you display the American flag. The New York Times swiftly defended Gay, saying her comments had been “taken out of context” and were discussing the politicization of the flag and not targeting the flag itself. “New York Times editorial board member Mara Gay’s comments on MSNBC have been irresponsibly taken out of context,” the Times said in a statement tweeted on Tuesday evening. “Her argument was that Trump and many of his supporters have politicized the American flag. The attacks on her today are ill-informed and grounded in bad-faith.” New York Times editorial board member Mara Gay's comments on MSNBC have been irresponsibly taken out of context. Today’s Left thinks that flying the American flag is controversial. Scary. — Rep. This is not different. B) I don't understand allowing yourself to be triggered by the flag of your own country. It belongs to you too. Don't imagine, and then spread, a message that doesn't exist. https://t.co/YZQ36tuxBE — Karol Markowicz (@karol) June 8, 2021 Gay quickly acknowledged the backlash, but said it only proves her point about how very racist people are. “I see I’m being trolled with the American flag this morning,” Gay said. “Trolling a Black journalist with the American flag is not the own some people think it is.” I see I’m being trolled with the American flag this morning.
