Was it the ultimate sarcastic joke?

Does it demonstrate how crucial it is to pick the right person to manage your social media?

Last week the NYPD posted photos of eight District 34 transit officers who broke up a gang fight and confiscated a weapon. The post included a photo of the proud officers and a photo of the weapon.

But it was the caption that garnered instant ridicule:

This firearm may not look like much, but it is still very dangerous in the wrong hands. Thankfully our Transit officers from District 34 were able to recover it after breaking up a fight near their precinct and placed the known gang member who possessed it under arrest.

Maybe the revolver was dangerous at one time, but commenters noted the gun pictured had no hammer, rendering it virtually useless.

A page called 2A Cops – Cops Supporting Gun Rights replied, “That is a bucket of parts, most notably devoid of a hammer, so no smashy the sparky part that makes the gun go bang bang…This is embarrassing as hell for all of law enforcement.”

Another person noted, “There is a technique for shooting that deadly weapon you have to hold the gun in one hand take a nail stick it in where the hammer supposed to strike the firing pin holding the gun and the nail at the same time you take the hammer Strike nail on the head which makes the firing pin strike the primer making a very accurate Well placed shot good job NYPD you guys know how to get weapons of mass destruction off the street.”

“It could be dangerous if the person you pull it on actually has a functional weapon”

And others pointed out how without a hammer, a gun could actually be “very dangerous.”

“If they throw it really hard at someone it could really hurt!”

“Not exaggerating, 90% of the items in your kitchen are more deadly than what’s left of that revolver. Try again.”

“If ‘it can kill’ is the standard I hope to see pictures of confiscated hands and feet soon.”

Actually, those comments definitely have merit.

According to the FBI’s crime statistics for 2018, there were 14,123 murders committed with a weapon of some kind. The number one weapon was a firearm (10,265), but the next biggest categories are knives or cutting instruments (1,515), personal weapons like hands, fists or feet (672) and blunt objects (443).

Some viewers thought perhaps the whole thing was a joke:

“Actually, if the public affairs officer that posted this is pro 2 amendment, they may be genius. This points out how stupid NY laws are concerning guns.”

“This post requires viewing with an actual sense of humor.”

And for the sake of those on the thin blue line of the NYPD, let’s hope that was the case.
